Fully-Funded Frank Ferguson Fellowship in Engineering for Zambians 2026–2027
The Ireland Fellows Program is currently accepting applications for the Frank Ferguson Fellowship in Engineering 2026–2027. Up to two Zambian engineers—one male and one female—will be sponsored to study a master’s degree in engineering in Ireland under this prize, which is co-sponsored by the Irish Government, the Engineering Institution of Zambia, and the University of Galway. Among the top 2% in the world, the University of Galway’s Engineering School provides excellent research facilities in a welcoming city.
Frank Ferguson, a distinguished engineer and inventor who dedicated fifty years to improving Zambia’s infrastructure through significant initiatives, is honored by this fellowship.
The program, which is fully funded by the Irish Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), supports Ireland’s regional strategies in Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Small Island Developing States as well as its international strategies, including Global Ireland, the Sustainable Development Goals implementation plan, The Global Island, and A Better World. In Ireland, the Irish Council for International Students (ICOS) assists in running the program, and in countries that qualify, embassies supervise its execution.
Eligibility for Fellowships
In order to be eligible for a Frank Ferguson Fellowship starting in the 2026 school year, candidates need to:
- possess Zambian citizenship and live in Zambia.
- possess a minimum of three years of experience in engineering
- Join the Engineering Institution of Zambia as a registered member.
- possess a Merit-level or higher engineering degree from an approved institution (or a closely related area).
- fulfill the academic prerequisites to enroll in the University of Galway’s master’s degree.
- not hold a master’s degree or higher, be enrolled in one, or begin one during the 2025–2026 school year
- Establish a new master’s degree engineering program in Ireland by August 2026 at the latest.
- Show promise as a leader, commitment to Zambia’s SDGs, and a will to deepen relations with Ireland.
- Select two engineering programs that fit their background and are eligible from the University of Galway’s list.
- Recognize the academic and language proficiency requirements for the courses they have selected.

- Prepare to accept the fellowship for the academic year 2026–2027.
